A Beginner’s Guide to Marketing on Threads

We’ve been talking about SEO for a while on the blog now, but today we are officially switching gears. As a small business, we understand the challenges that small businesses face with marketing and connecting to your potential customers with limited time and resources. It’s hard to keep up with all the social media trends and apps, so we’re hoping to make Threads at least a little easier to navigate.

What is Threads?

Think of Threads as a social media platform similar to Twitter. It’s another text-based platform where you can share your thoughts, videos, or photos within the limit of 500 characters. It was launched by Meta (former Facebook, who also owns Instagram), and you can create a Threads account through your Instagram account.

How many users does it have?

Threads currently has about 275 million monthly active users. It’s not the only text-based platform that people have flocked to over the past year, but since it’s directly connected to Instagram, it’s worth considering from a small business perspective.

What are some strategies for marketing on Threads?

1) Build & Engage With The Community

Threads is essentially designed to facilitate more personal, direct conversations than other platforms. Unlike Instagram or X, the atmosphere on Threads tends to be a little less polished and on the more casual spectrum. That might make some businesses nervous, but it honestly creates an opportunity for brands to form more personable relationships with users.

To market effectively on Threads, focus on building a community around your brand rather than simply broadcasting messages. Some ways you might do this is by responding to comments/questions or hosting Q&A sessions.

2) Create Conversational Content

Since Threads thrives more on authenticity, you can afford to post less polished content. You can share behind-the-scenes glimpses into your business or share stories from a day in the office. You can also utilize less formal language and lean more into humor and emojis on this kind of platform. Relatable, more conversational content only opens up the opportunity for engagement on this platform.

3) Leverage Threads’ Unique Features

Like with all platforms, utilizing the features that make it special only increases your chances of engagement and growth. For Threads, you can utilize hashtags the way you would on Twitter or on Instagram; incorporate them into your posts to increase visibility. You can use posts from Threads on your Instagram stories, which is a feature we encourage small businesses to use. Also, if you’re able to collaborate with other brands or influencers, be sure to utilize the tagging and mentions features.

Threads, like all social media platforms, are constantly evolving and tweaking the features of its app. However, its more conversational nature does provide a different avenue for businesses, especially small businesses, to connect to a greater audience. Building a community, creating conversational content, and leveraging the app’s features are a good place to start.

So, have you used Threads yet? What has your experience with the app been like so far?
